Style Icon: Claudia Kishi

The summer between Second Grade and Third grade I feel in love with the BSC, aka The Babysitters Club. I read a book a day that summer, I remember going to the library and carrying out a towering stack of books to read for the week. I couldn't wait until I was old enough to babysit and have my own club, Gosh Kristy, what a BRILLIANT idea! I guess I could form a club now. I mean I do have my own phone I to use, and plenty of places to stash candy for our Monday Night meetings. And I also have plenty of notebooks for Mary Anne to write down information in and I bet Stacey would insist we save up enough enough money to purchase an iPad for the group....

Although I did always love Stacey and really related more to the California girl Dawn, I always loved Claudia and her crazy inspired outfits. When your sister's a certified Genius you have to find someway to stand out right?
Some of my collection, that my Mom lets me store at her place, yes I still have all my books.

Some visual pictures of Claudia's outfits. She had me wanting to raid my Dad's closet for his old shirts. I also wanted to wear themed outfits because of her.

Gotta love the bulky sweater!
So Alexander Wang!
Ahh the good old days!

  2. Oh my gosh, I devoured these when I was in grade school! I especially loved the "Super Specials" and probably read each of those 10 times over. And I love how you still have all your originals. (I think I donated mine to the library somewhere down the line...) Sometimes passing the the YA section in a bookstore I'll catch a glimpse of the modern covers and they are just not the same as the originals with the block-font.

LOL, and yes, Claudia's style was amazing. I still remember a bunch of her outfits. Loved seeing some of the things she was wearing on the covers, thank you for that =)

  7. Oh, such a blast from the past! I am a child of the 80s, and I grew up with the Babysitters Club series and the Sweet Valley Twins/Sweet Valley High books. Sweet Valley was my favorite series! I will always remember the Unicorn club and how I thought Jessica and Lila sounded like the coolest girls in the world.

As far as BSC goes, I was much more of a Stacey McGill girl...although I was probably in reality the most like Mary Anne Spier ;)

  8. I read all of these books too! Once, I was at the library trying to get some grad school work done. I randomly stopped into the YA section and reread the first book. I heard that she is going to start up the series again!

  10. eeek!! I loved reading about Claudia's outfits. I usually would skim through the first chapter, when all the characters would be re-introduced, but I'd always stop at Claudia to read about what she was wearing.

My favorite BSC book ever was Mary Ann's Makeover. I loved reading about her going shopping and getting clothes, and picturing the clothes she was buying!!

  16. I think I was the only girl in my group of friends without a mile-long stack of BSC books lining my bookshelf. But I was a big-time reader (and still am)! For some reason I just never got into BSC. :)

  18. I loved those books, and probably would still read them if I hadn't given them all away to neighbors. Have you seen this site that is all about what Claudia wore?? It's great. http://www.whatclaudiawore.com/

  19. I'm sure you probably already know, but Ann M. Martin just published the prequel to the BSC series.
I couldn't quite get into the BSC; but I was srsly obsessed with Sweet Valley Twins. Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield were the coolest! :) I'm sad those books are all out of print now; yet the Boxcar Children are still being sold in bookstores. Bummer.

  21. Wow, talk about blast from the past! I haven't thought of BSC in forever! And SVH! And shoot, let's pop in some Nancy Drew to round things out too.

Pretty soon I'll be getting all nolstagic for my Jem and She-Ra dolls!

My dad is such an anti-pack rat - unfortunately all of my stuff like that has been long ago donated.

  23. YES! YES! YES!

Great memories reading BSC, SVH and anything Judy Blume under my covers when I should have been sleeping.....

There was another series - can't think of the name but one of the characters only wore red, black and white? Anyone remember that one...?
